Lighten up -- no pun intended!

I'm making some progress (albeit slow) with clearing out some things around here. I'm a firm believer in keeping stuff out of the landfill: I will not toss something usable, even if it is ugly or out of style! To that end, I've listed a few things on FreeCycle and had great success finding new homes for everything.

You may recall that we recently replaced our light fixtures. For a long time now, I've been tripping over boxes of chandeliers and globes. They did not sell at my garage sale back in May, nor will consignment stores take them. Before listing them on FreeCycle, I posted a message on Two Peas asking for additional suggestions, and someone suggested donating them to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore.

Duh! I've driven past that store a few times but didn't even think of it. This place accepts donations of household/building materials of all kinds, including out-of-style brass light fixtures! And it's tax deductible. Anyone can donate or shop there, and the profits benefit Habitat for Humanity.

So I dropped off my light fixtures, picked up my receipt, and took a look inside the store. Wow! Sinks, carpet, tile, wood flooring, cabinetry...they have just about everything you need for home improvement. If you have a store in your area, check it out -- for donating or for shopping. It's definitely a win-win kind of place!

I'll have to remember them for the future. Glad you were able to find a good home for the lights.

Good information to know, Janet! I have an old patio door that I need to get down there.

There are a couple in Houston, but they're both on opposite sides of town from me. Still, I might have to check it out - we're moving from an apartment to a house next month & we're going to need SO much stuff!

I've done freecycle only once before & that was to give away my moving boxes last time I moved. Turns out (in the FOURTH LARGEST city in the USA no less!!!!!!!!!!) that I actually knew or at least recognized the woman who asked for my boxes! She's a friend of my cousin's and has kids in my kids school. Small world.

DH and I love the Habitat ReStore. There are 3 around the city. We haven't donated anything yet. I listed a whole bunch of stuff when we started remodeling our house on FreeCycle and Craigslist. I also donate our clothes to the local battered women's shelter.

I've been wanting to donate a few items myself. I'll have to check out if Habitat for Humanity is local here. I need to get rid of furniture that is in good condition. I just don't want to toss good stuff ya know.

I wish I had thought about the Habitat store when I was trying to get rid of my window shades. I still have 3 sets to replace, so I will take the old shades there when I take them down.

I love our Habitat ReStore. :) Someone told me about it years ago and I've donated plenty of our old fixtures. And had fun shopping. You never know what treasures you will discover there.

Way to go on continuing to lighten up! I've slowed down a bit on my progress. Hopefully reading your post will help kick me in gear again.

I have NEVER heard of that store! Will definitely have to keep it in mind, though if we were donating that would involve hauling stuff out of town, but oh well:)
